How it works
From plan geometry to a takeoff you can check.
Seven stages, and a visible line between what is counted deterministically and what is a suggestion waiting on an estimator.
Certainty key
- Stage 01
PDF structure
ExactA supported vector plan set is parsed for the drawing primitives it already contains — lines, arcs, blocks, text, and the layer structure the drafter published.
Deterministic. Nothing is inferred at this stage.
- Stage 02
Repeated geometry
ExactIdentical or near-identical symbol geometry is detected across the sheet and across the set. Repetition is the signal — a fixture symbol placed 37 times is 37 copies of the same geometry.
Counted, not estimated.
- Stage 03
Fixture family
ExactEach repeated geometry becomes one family with one quantity and one instance list. From here the estimator works with six families instead of 131 symbols.
One family. One decision. Every instance.
- Stage 04
Work scope
Review requiredLineweight, layer, and drawing convention are read to separate new work from existing to remain, relocated work, and demolition. Where the drawing does not settle it, the family is flagged rather than assumed.
An exact symbol count is not automatically the bid-scope count.
- Stage 05
Evidence
Evidence-backedPlan text, the fixture schedule, the legend, prior confirmations, and geometry ranking are collected as separate, labelled signals. Ranked geometry matches are an ordering signal — they never set a name by themselves.
Sources stay visible and stay separate.
- Stage 06
Estimator confirmation
Evidence-backedThe estimator confirms, picks a different candidate, or leaves the family unresolved. That decision is the only thing that names a family.
The machine counts. You decide.
- Stage 07
Takeoff output
ExactFamilies, counts, scope states, sheet references, and status leave as a structured takeoff — with unresolved families still visible as unresolved.
Nothing gets a name it did not earn.
What we do not claim
Exact where the drawing allows it. Honest where it doesn’t.
What LumenTakeoff does
- Counts supported vector symbol geometry deterministically
- Traces every counted family back to its sheets
- Separates machine-known facts from human-review decisions
- Shows schedules, legends, and prior confirmations as evidence
- Retains confirmed names within your firm's context
What it does not do
- Read every scanned or raster plan set
- Name every fixture without an estimator
- Replace manual review of exceptions
- Guess a scope decision the drawing does not support
- Estimate a project end to end

- Supported vector plan sets
- Lighting fixture families and counts
- Evidence you can check against the drawing
